Our goal
Our goal is to create the leading home for open scientific research: independent, collaborative, and open to anyone willing to do the work of advancing knowledge. In Interlaken we build the reference institution for decentralized and collaborative science.
What we do
Funding programme
We offer research grants and fellowships to scientists at every career stage. Our funding programmes ask for open research practices, which require that research is planned with openness in mind: outputs are published openly, made FAIR (opens in a new tab), and licensed for reuse. Where a discovery can do good, we help to find ways for widespread, affordable dissemination.

We operate globally through a fellowship programme and welcome fellows on the Etherlaken campus, working at the frontier of Open Science itself, Open Health and Open Hardware. We invite our fellows, alumni and the public alike to meet and exchange ideas in our open forum on the Etherlaken campus.

Open by default
Outputs are published openly and without delay, with preprints or similar open means as standard and FAIR principles applied throughout.
Public benefit first
Where commercial value is created, it serves the public good rather than enclosing it.
Merit over credentials
We support researchers on the strength of their ideas and their questions, not on the basis of title, age, or institutional affiliation. We reward integrity and question systems that promote career advancement over mission-driven science.
Independence and integrity
Governance, science, and assets are deliberately separated, with strict conflict-of-interest rules and transparent reporting.
Swiss home for a global community
From our base in the Bernese Oberland we welcome scientists from every country, in the tradition of borderless and independent research institutions. The Open Science Foundation is a Swiss non-profit foundation within the meaning of Art. 80 et seq. of the Swiss Civil Code (ZGB), domiciled in Matten bei Interlaken.
