An open, versioned map of the biophoton and ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) research field: 18,355 works and 39,312 authors, seeded from Michal Cifra's reference library, enriched via OpenAlex, clustered into sub-fields, and scored for openness.

This is the first open data release from the Open Science Institute's biophoton programme: a complete, versioned map of the field that studies the faint light living tissue emits. It gathers the works and authors we could find, links them through citation and co-authorship, and scores the field for how open its outputs are.

What it maps

The map covers 18,355 works and 39,312 authors. It was seeded from Michal Cifra's reference library, then enriched through OpenAlex and clustered into sub-fields. Every work carries a composite importance score and a full-text search index, and the researchers are ranked in companion tables. Citation, co-authorship, bibliographic-coupling, and co-citation graphs are included for network analysis.

What is in the release

The archive holds the field-map database as SQLite, Parquet, and CSV, a separate ranked paper index with full-text search, ranked researcher tables, and the network graphs as GraphML for Gephi. Two self-contained browser tools, a field report and a paper search, open with no server. The docs folder carries the methods and a state-of-field report. Abstracts follow OpenAlex and ship as an inverted index, so the tools reconstruct reading order in the browser.

Provenance and openness

The data is derived from OpenAlex and released under CC0 1.0, into the public domain. The build pipeline is idempotent and cached, and each release pins its snapshot date; this is the July 2026 snapshot. Only public identifiers are included: names, ORCID, and ROR institutions. Corresponding-author email addresses collected during the project are held privately by the Foundation and are not part of this release.
