Advancing science through openness
We believe scientific knowledge is a global commons. We work to make scientific research open, collaborative, and accessible to all. We are supporting open tools, transparent workflows, and research practices that accelerate discovery for the public good.
Values
Mission statement
Science belongs to everyone.
Open Science Institute
Our institute based in Interlaken advances the foundation’s mission through research, development, and open scientific infrastructure.
Funding
Our fellowships support the people and projects that put Open Science into practice.
Our Partners
Location
Interlaken, Switzerland, is the foundation’s inspiring home in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The Etherlaken campus provides a calm and focused setting for research, exchange, and residency, while remaining well connected to major European cities.
The Etherlaken campus brings together the Open Science Foundation’s offices, research facilities — including the Open Twin Hub, a Science Lounge, and a FabLab — alongside residences for fellows and a dedicated conference venue.

Scientific text is now cheap to produce, and the challenge is checking its claims. Our new fellow, Michael Saldivar, argues that an AI system should show its reasoning step by step, or decline to answer.
openUC2: can biophoton imaging be made affordable?
Our partners at openUC2 in Jena have written up how they built the biophoton microscope for the Open Science Institute, and how they cut its cost: a hobbyist astronomy camera, sawn open, milled flat and water-cooled to -30°C.
